Talk to your students about maintaining respect for the facility, all players (their team and other teams), all coaches, and any other staff involved in their game.
Students and fans should never directly talk to a referee and should never yell anything towards or about a referee.
Keep comments and cheering positive. We are all here to support and encourage our teams.
Fans, parents, students, and staff represent GALS at sporting events. Please be respectful and positive with your interactions with others from our team and other teams.
Do not leave trash at sporting events. Our host schools are kind enough to let us use their facilities.
GALS LA Athletics FAQs
-
Girls Athletic Leadership School Los Angeles (GALS LA) offers three team sports across the year: volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and soccer in the spring. Teams compete through the Foundation for Interscholastic Youth Athletics (FIYA) in partnership with After School All Stars (ASAS). There is no cost to participate, and no tryouts or cuts — every student who wants to play is placed on a team.
-
No. Team sports are optional at GALS LA. Every student participates in daily Morning Movement and movement-based instruction as part of the academic program, but joining a competitive team is entirely a student's choice. GALS LA offers volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and soccer in the spring, all in partnership with FIYA and After School All Stars. Students who prefer other after-school programming are not at any disadvantage.

Yes. The GALS LA Dance Team is one of the school's most celebrated programs. The team has performed at Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and UCLA Football games, bringing GALS LA pride well beyond the Van Nuys campus. The Dance Team is open to all GALS LA students and reflects the school's broader commitment to movement, confidence, and community pride.
